Five Traits of a Healthy 21st Century Disciple
This last year St. Luke's Church Council courageously decided to
support the move to an intentionally focused and purpose driven
ministry. Many leadership hours have been invested in prayerfully
discerning God's vision for St. Luke's ministry into the 21st Century.
Pastor Connie and I preached a fall sermon series on the proposed
five St. Luke's "purposes" and the open forums have been very
helpful in fleshing out the ministry team models.
I would like every partner in St. Luke's ministry to prayerfully
consider adopting the following "Five Traits of a Healthy 21st
Century Disciple" which I shared in my St. Luke's 20th Birthday
sermon as a primary 1999 New Year resolution:
I will strive to:
1) Worship Weekly: Welcome All to Worship Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
(Matthew 22:37, Psalm 122:1, Hebrews 10:23-25)
2) Pray and Read Scripture Daily: Lead All to Learn God's Story of Salvation and Our Story of Response.
(Matthew 28:20, Deuteronomy 6:4-9, I Thessalonians 5:16-19, Psalm 119:105)
3) Grow Spiritually and Encourage Spiritual Growth in Others Through Relationships: Gather All To Grow Spiritually Into A Community of Faith.
(Matthew 28:19, Philippians 2:1-4)
4) Serve on Outreach Beyond St. Luke's: Will All to Witness With A Faith That Works In Real Life.
(Matthew 28:19, Matthew 25:31-36)
5) Serve in Ministry at St. Luke's: Send All To Serve Into The World In Jesus' Name
(Matthew 20:26-28, 22:39, Galatians 5:13, I Peter 4:10)
In response to God's love, forgiveness and eternal promises, I will also strive to Share Generously and
Sacrificially of my Time, Spiritual Gifts and Financial Resources.
(Malachi 3:10, II Corinthians 8:12)
I invite you to pray for the Spiritual Health of all St. Luke's Partners in Ministry throughout 1999,
Pastor Joel
